Carsten Koch (* 1975 in Kaiserslautern ) is a German organist and choir director . He is cantor at the Union Church in Idstein , Hesse , where he directs the Idsteiner Kantorei concert choir and the Nassau Chamber Philharmonic that he founded. He teaches orchestral conducting at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts .

Life

Carsten Koch studied music and German for teaching and graduated with a focus on organ playing and choral conducting. He continued his education at the Frankfurt University of Music , where he studied orchestral conducting and organ with Daniel Roth . Koch refined his orchestral conducting technique in the conductor workshop Interaction in Berlin with players from the Berlin Philharmonic . In 2005 he reached the final round of the international conducting competition in Bad Homburg. He also worked as an assistant to Wojciech Rajski at the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Sopot .

Koch has a teaching position for orchestral conducting at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts . Since 2003, Koch has been cantor of the Protestant Union Church in Idstein and also dean's cantor . He took over the Idsteiner Kantorei concert choir from Edwin Müller and founded the Nassau Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra in the first year, which accompanies choir concerts and plays orchestral concerts. The art-historically significant church has a Walcker organ from 1912 in the prospectus of the forerunner instrument, a Stumm organ from 1783.

Act

Koch conducted concerts in the dean's office Rheingau-Taunus around Idstein. He started a series of symphony concerts in the Union Church on the Open Monument Day 2009, in which he performed all Beethoven symphonies , among other things . The cycle ended in 2012 with the Ninth Symphony , and at the same time celebrated 40 years of the Idsteiner Kantorei and 100 years of the Walcker organ. Koch conducted choir concerts, two or three a year in the Union Church, others in the Catholic Church of St. Martin and in smaller churches of the deanery. In international collaboration with the Belgian choir De Wase Kantorij from the twin town Zwijndrecht , he directed Haydn's The Creation 2016, both in Idstein and in Zwijndrecht. In 2017, the Union Church reopened after lengthy renovations, and the first concert featured Ola Gjeilo's Sunrise Mass and Eric Whitacre's Five Hebrew Love Songs .

Koch's artistic work is particularly evident in the area of ecumenism . In 2010 he conducted Verdi's Messa da Requiem in St. Martin in an ecumenical project by three choirs. In 2015 he led the combined choirs in the Gloria by Karl Jenkins , while his Catholic colleague Franz Fink took over the Te Deum . In Advent 2018 they worked on all six cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio as a joint choral project and performed them in two concerts in the Union Church.
