The Caryoteae are a tribe of the palm family (Arecaceae).

features

The representatives are slender to mighty palms. A trunk may be missing or it may be upright. The leaves are single or double pinnate. They are induplicate (they tear open along the folds on the adaxial side of the leaves).

The palm trees bloom only once in a lifetime ( hapaxanthia ) or several times. They are monocial , very rarely diocesan . The individual inflorescences are one or two sexes. They have a cover leaf and several, mostly large bracts on the inflorescence stalk ( spathe ). The inflorescence is branched one to rarely triple. The flowers stand in triads on the surface, with a central female being surrounded by two lateral male flowers. Other flower groups are derivatives of the triad. The female flowers have valvate petals . The gynoeceum is fused, triple with three ovules . The fruit contains one to three seeds.

distribution

The representatives occur in South and Southeast Asia via Malesia to Australia and the West Pacific.

Systematics

The Caryoteae are assigned to the subfamily Coryphoideae within the Arecaceae family . The tribes as defined by Dransfield et al. (2008) is a natural kin group ( Monophylum ). Her sister group is the group from Corypheae and Borasseae .

Three genera are counted to the tribe:

Because of the flower triads and the similarity in the inflorescence with the tribe Iriarteeae , the Caryoteae were formerly classified in the subfamily Arecoideae . However, molecular genetic studies clearly indicate the relationship to the Coryphoideae. This is supported morphologically by the induplicate leaves, even if they are pinnate in the Caryoteae and fanned out in the vast majority of the other Coryphoideae.
