Casimir of Pászthory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Casimir von Pászthory (born April 1, 1886 in Budapest , † February 18, 1966 in Wermelskirchen ) was an Austrian composer . His music, which is stylistically rooted in the Wagner - Strauss tradition, without foregoing his own creative stylistic elements, has largely been forgotten today. It experienced at least a partial renaissance in 2004 when the opera Tilman Riemenschneider was performed again on the occasion of the 1300th anniversary of the city of Würzburg .

Life

Casimir von Pászthory was the son of a senior government official of the Royal Curia, who came from an old Hungarian family. His mother was the pianist Gisela von Voigt, who came from a German aristocratic family with origins in Hanover. As a former student of Franz Liszt she was to old age actively and played more than 84-year-old as part of a Liszt celebration in Budapest one of the piano concertos of the Master on its wings .

After his mother married August Göllerich for the second time , Casimir von Pászthory came to Nuremberg , where he attended high school. He then studied in Vienna at the juridical faculty, but focused mainly on studying music, especially the cello with Paul Grümmer . After extensive journeys that took him all over Europe to Asia Minor, he settled in Vienna, where he taught cello at the conservatory for many years . He also took part in the musical life of his time as an accompanist to his songs on the piano and as a conductor of his orchestral works.

His partner Dora Baubin, whom he married in 1911, took an intensive part in his artistic work and wrote the textbooks for the stage works “The Princess and the Swineherd” and “Tilman Riemenschneider”.

Pászthory was a member of the NSDAP . When Pászthory lost his apartment and possessions in Vienna as a result of the war in 1945, after a long stay at Lake Attersee , he moved to Salzburg in 1950 , where he mainly occupied himself with composition. In 1953 he was awarded the title of Professor by the Austrian President . For his eightieth birthday, the award of the golden ring of honor of the city of Salzburg was planned, but this could no longer take place. He spent the last days of his life in the Bergermühle in Wermelskirchen .
