Berg Castle

The mountain palace is a small Renaissance - castle in the Upper Mosel in Germany . It stands on the edge, within the Saarland town of Nennig , in the immediate vicinity of the French and Luxembourg borders, not far from the Schengen triangle , where the historic European Schengen Agreement was signed and ratified on June 14, 1985 .

history

The original building was probably built in the 9th / 10th. Built in the 18th century as a moated castle. In 1180 the knights Bovo and Reiner "de Berg" were mentioned as witnesses in a document from the Archbishop of Trier about a long lease, and in 1202 Egidius von Berg was lord of the castle. Arnold von Sierck acquired the castle in 1413.

Johann von Kriechingen and Pittlingen had the castle converted into a palace in 1580. This explains the renaissance style that is visible today, despite the originally medieval building. From 1760 the ownership structure cannot be clearly assigned, it is divided between several principalities.

In 1769, France ceded its ownership rights to Empress Maria Theresa , and after the Congress of Vienna , Berg Castle came into Prussian possession in 1815 . Berg Castle passed into civil ownership in 1910. In the war winter of 1944/45 , the castle was almost completely destroyed.

The Saarland became owners in 1950 and had the castle rebuilt from 1955. It was used as a school camp from 1958 to 1984 . The Saarland Sport Toto GmbH acquired the castle in 1986 and left it among the architects Bernhard Focht, Erich Fisabre and interior designer Siegward Graf Pilati expand as a hotel.

In 1990 the hotel and a casino were opened in the modern extension . From 1997 a private hotel chain became a new operator and in 1998 opened a gourmet restaurant in the palace with chef Christian Bau , who has been awarded three Michelin stars every year since 2010 . A larger luxury hotel with a wellness area and beauty farm was opened in 2001 in the vicinity of the castle. The castle was integrated into the hotel complex alongside the new building and a country inn (below the castle).

Todays use

The castle is now used as part of the Hotel Schloss Berg. Hotel rooms and suites are set up on the upper floors.

The Saarländische Spielbanken GmbH operates the Casino Schloss Berg in a castle extension.

Below the palace is a renaissance garden that was created as part of the “ Gardens without Borders ” project.
