On the Upper Moselle between Wincheringen and Nittel

As Obermosel is called in Germany the 45 km long river section of the Mosel from the German - French - Luxembourg border triangle in Perl to the confluence of Saar in Konz short of Trier . From the border triangle to the confluence of the Sauer, the Upper Moselle forms the border between Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate on the one hand and Luxembourg on the other. This section of the river, referred to here as the Upper Moselle, is not identical to the geographic upper reaches of the Moselle, which extends in Lorraine from the source of the Moselle near Bussang in the Vosges via Épinal and Nancy to around Metz .

Wine has been grown on the slopes of the Upper Moselle since Roman times . The wine-growing area belongs to the German wine-growing region " Mosel " (until 2007 this wine-growing area was called " Mosel-Saar-Ruwer ") and is also known as the "Southern Wine Moselle " for further delimitation. The Luxembourgers call the road along the Upper Moselle that runs along the banks of the Luxembourg "Luxembourg Wine Route".

It is considered a curiosity that the only wine-growing area in the Saarland is not on the Saar , but on the Upper Moselle in the large municipality of Perl . The Saar wine, which also belongs to the Moselle wine-growing region, does not grow here ; rather, it is produced on the lower reaches of the Saar in Rhineland-Palatinate . The wine produced in the Saarland in the Moseltor area is therefore a Moselle wine .

On the Upper Moselle, the grape varieties Rivaner / Müller-Thurgau , Kerner , Weißer and Blauer Pinot Noir and, last but not least, the Elbling , typical of the Upper Moselle , which the Romans are said to have brought with them, are grown. In addition, the wineries on the Upper Moselle offer sparkling wine , wine and fruit brandies and liqueurs . They largely market their products themselves and also present them in wine or tasting rooms , ostrich taverns and during the warmer months at court parties.
