Caspar Bose (* 1645 in Leipzig ; † April 21, 1700 in Leipzig) was an important Leipzig merchant and councilor.

Life

Caspar Bose was the older of the two sons of Johann Ernst Bose (1612–1681), who ran a silverware manufacture that was privileged by the electorate in Leipzig . Gold and silver wire, which was processed into various trimmings , was made in it. The trade in these ensured the family's prosperity and membership of the Leipzig patriciate .

Caspar Bose attended the French School in Leyden . From 1667 to 1669 he went on an educational trip through Germany , France , the Netherlands and Italy , where he stayed in Venice , Rome and Naples . In 1671 he joined his father's factory with his brother Georg .

As a successful merchant, he also held municipal offices. In 1685 he became councilor and "captain of the Grimmian quarter". From 1690 he was a member of the charitable society of confidants .

Caspar Bose had a variety of interests. However, his knowledge of gardening and plant breeding is particularly noteworthy. He corresponded with the most important German, Dutch and French authors of garden literature of his time. This enabled him to transform a garden that the family owned in the eastern suburb of Leipzig and which he enlarged, into the first Leipzig baroque garden known far beyond the city limits . His material situation and his trade connections all over the world made it possible for him to procure exotic plants. The garden was temporarily open to visitors, for example during trade fairs. This large Bosian garden , which bore the name to differentiate it from the small Bosian of his brother Georg, was owned by the family until 1824, but had to be reduced more and more from the middle of the 18th century due to a lack of appropriate funds.

Caspar Bose married Anne Sophie Peilicke in 1671. From this marriage came the sons Caspar Bose (1672–1730) and Georg Heinrich Bose (1682–1731). The first inherited the Großbosischer Garten, and the second acquired today's Bose house at Thomaskirchhof and converted it into a baroque residential building. As a neighbor, he was friends with Johann Sebastian Bach .
