Castêlo de Maia (also Castelo de Maia ) is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese city ​​of Maia .

Administration and history

The municipality was created on September 29, 2013 as part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal from the merger of the municipalities of Barca , Gemunde , Gondim , Santa Maria de Avioso and São Pedro de Avioso .

18,266 inhabitants live in an area of ​​19.9 km² (as of June 30, 2011).

The name Castêlo de Maia goes back to an earlier municipality name and refers to the historic castle of Maia. The local train station on the Linha de Guimarães route , the Castêlo da Maia Ginásio Clube sports club (multiple national volleyball champion), and the Sport Clube Castêlo da Maia football club, which plays at the district level, also refer to the name.
