Castelfondo (in Nones : Cjastelfon , German outdated Kastelpfund ) is a fraction of the Italian municipality ( comune ) Borgo d'Anaunia in the province of Trento , region of Trentino-Alto Adige .
geography
The place is about 42.5 kilometers north of Trento in the upper Non Valley not far from the border with Deutschnonsberg , the part of the valley belonging to South Tyrol .
history
The Castello di Castelfondo was initially owned by the Lords of Castelfondo and then by the Cagnò of Castel Cagnò (12th century). The castle was under episcopal Tridentine law, but it soon became part of the Tyrolean fiefdom. The reconstruction carried out by the Rottenburg (14th century) is attested by the family coat of arms on the small tower of the outer boundary wall. As successors to the Fuchs , the Lords of Thun came into possession of the castle in 1471. Their branch, which emigrated to Bohemia around 1600, sold the abandoned castle in the 18th century to the branch at Castell Brughier ( Castel Bragher in Coredo ), who still own it today. The building was damaged by the peasant uprising (16th century) and other wars. The castle was renovated at the beginning of the 20th century. Its interior is a veritable art and history shrine: the bishops' room with the pictures of the Prince-Bishops of Thun, the armory, the Don Chisciotte room, the well-stocked library with archive.
Castelfondo was an independent municipality until 2019 and merged with the neighboring municipalities of Fondo and Malosco on January 1, 2020 to form the new municipality of Borgo d'Anaunia.
