Track and course of the race
The start of Milan – Turin 2012 took place in the Milan suburb of Settimo Milanese in the west of the metropolis. The first forty kilometers led the field on flat terrain to the west to the city of Novara , from where it went on a gently sloping road first north and then south again towards Vercelli . Eventually the drivers moved to the southwest. Shortly before Turin, a first 4.1 kilometer climb was on the program. After the descent into the metropolis, the 3.5 km long final ascent (9.2% steep) to the pilgrimage church of Superga in the east of the city began.
After 24 kilometers, the two Italians Alfredo Balloni ( Farnese Vini-Selle Italia ) and Federico Rocchetti ( Utensilnord Named ) were the two outliers of the day who managed to work out a lead of a maximum of nine minutes. On the ascent eighteen kilometers before the end, the two were caught up with, while Eros Capecchi ( Liquigas-Cannondale ) and Pole Przemysław Niemiec ( Lampre-ISD ), who fell at the end of the descent, were in the lead. Capecchi was caught by the pursuers at the beginning of the final ascent, the Swede Fredrik Kessiakoff from the Astana Pro Team took the lead as a soloist, counterattacks from the chasing group initially remained unsuccessful, until finally Joaquim Rodríguez ( Katusha team ) and Diego Ulissi (Lampre -ISD). Shortly afterwards, Alberto Contador ( Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank ) came up, while Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) was unable to hold the Spaniard's rear wheel. Shortly before the one-kilometer mark, Contador then pulled the other one away and celebrated an undisputed solo victory with a fifteen-second lead over Ulissi. For the Vuelta winner this was the first victory in a one-day race in his entire professional career.
