Tinkoff was a cycling team that ran from 2001 to 2014 with a Danish license and then with a Russian license until it was dissolved at the end of the 2016 season .
organization
The team founder and long-time team manager was the former Tour de France winner Bjarne Riis , who until December 2013 also owned the team operator Riis Cycling A / S - now Tinkov Sport .
The longstanding main sponsor and namesake of the team was the IT service provider Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) until the end of the 2009 season . In June 2008 a new sponsor was presented with Saxo Bank . The bank initially appeared as a co-sponsor and then as the main sponsor until the end of the year. In 2011, Saxo Bank acted as the main sponsor of the team with co-sponsor SunGard . In 2012 the team started again as Team Saxo Bank, from June supported by the co-sponsor Tinkoff Bank . After the owner of Tinkoff Bank, Oleg Tinkow , initially announced his intention to end his involvement with the team in 2013, he acquired the operating company Riis Cycling A / S in December 2013 , which from then on traded as Tinkov Sport ; Riis remained team manager. Bjarne Riis was suspended by Oleg Tinkow in March 2015 and then released. Tinkow cited the reason that Riis was not needed. He sees himself as a good substitute for Riis.
Most recently, the team's sporting directors were Giuseppe Toni , Bruno Cenghialta , Steven de Jongh , Lars Michaelsen , Nicki Sørensen , Patxi Vila , Sean Yates and Tristan Hoffman . The team was based in Hørsholm .
On October 15, 2015, Saxo-Bank announced its withdrawal from sponsorship for the end of the 2016 season.
Doping allegations
In the course of the doping investigation against Lance Armstrong, Tyler Hamilton , who drove for Team CSC in 2002 and 2003, charged Riis. The latter brought him together with the Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes , who has meanwhile become known through the doping scandal , and knew about his doping program.
successes
The team was very successful in the Tour de France . Carlos Sastre won the Tour de France 2008 and Andy Schleck the Tour de France 2010 . In 2005 Ivan Basso finished second overall and Andy Schleck achieved this in 2009. In 2004 Ivan Basso was third overall. In 2003 and 2009 the team won the team championship. In 2001 and 2002 Laurent Jalabert won the jersey of the best climber . Andy Schleck also won the white jersey of the best young professional three times in a row from 2008 to 2010 .
Ivan Basso finished the 2006 Giro d'Italia as the overall winner. Alberto Contador won the Vuelta a España in 2012 , which means that the team can boast overall victories in all three Grand Tours.
The team's drivers have also won several major one-day races. Fabian Cancellara won the Paris – Roubaix (2006 and 2010), Milan – Sanremo 2008 and the Tour of Flanders 2010 twice for the team . Stuart O'Grady won Paris – Roubaix in 2007. Nick Nuyens won the 2011 Tour of Flanders . Tyler Hamilton (2003) and Andy Schleck (2010) finished Liège – Bastogne – Liège as winners. Furthermore Laurent Jalabert won the Clásica San Sebastián twice (2001 and 2002). In 2002 Jakob Piil won Paris-Tours , and in 2013 Roman Kreuziger won the Amstel Gold Race .
During his time with the team, Fabian Cancellara became the 2008 Olympic time trial champion and four times world champion in this discipline.
