The Cathkin Park was a football stadium in the district of Cross Hill of the Scottish city of Glasgow . It was the home ground of Third Lanark between 1872 and 1903 when it played in the Scottish Football League . It has also hosted four Scottish FA Cup finals and twice international matches for the Scottish national football team . The decisive game for the Scottish Championship of 1891 was also played here.
history
The club was founded in 1872 as the Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers football team under the name 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers. When it separated from its military roots, the club was named Third Lanark. Cathkin Park belonged to a piece of land that was part of a parade ground .
When it developed into a stadium, a grandstand was built on the west side of the pitch, a pavilion in the northwest corner , an open seating grandstand on the north and east side and an earth wall at the south end.
In 1880 , a Scottish Cup final was played for the first time in this stadium in Cathkin Park . Here, the won FC Queen's Park 3: 0 against FC Thornliebank . In 1882 Queen's Park won the replay final against FC Dumbarton 4-1. It was also selected as the venue for the 1884 final . However, the game did not take place because the FC Vale of Leven did not have enough players available. FC Queen's Park won by walkover . In 1886 it was the last time Endspielort in the Scottish Cup, as the record winner Queen's Park with 3: 1 against FC Renton won.
In 1884, two were internationals from Scotland during the British Home Championship 1883-84 held in Cathkin Park, with Scotland on March 15 in front of 10,000 spectators against England with 1: 0 against and on 29 March 5000 before Wales won 1: 4 . Scotland won the first edition of the tournament.
Third Lanark was a founding member of the Scottish Football League in 1890 , and the first league game was played on August 23, 1890 at Cathkin Park against eventual champions FC Dumbarton . The game ended in a 3-1 defeat. At the end of the 1890/91 season there was a play-off between the tied FC Dumbarton and the Glasgow Rangers in Cathkin Park. After a 2-2 draw in front of 10,000 spectators, the championship was divided.
There was a record attendance in the league on August 19, 1899 when 16,000 spectators saw a 5-1 defeat against the Rangers. This was achieved again on September 28, 1901 in a game against the Rangers. This time the game ended 2-2.
At the end of the 1902/03 season , the club left Cathkin Park. Third Lanark took over the old Hampden Park of FC Queen's Park, which moved into the new building of the same name, today's Hampden Park . Third Lanark renamed old Hampden Park New Cathkin Park. Later it was known simply as Cathkin Park .
The site of the original Cathkin Park from 1872 is now used as a housing estate.
