The fan -shaped frogfish ( Caulophrynidae) are a family of deep-sea frogfish (Ceratioidei). They live in the Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans in the deep sea.

features

The fish have a round to oval body and have greatly elongated dorsal and anal fin rays. The four species of the genus Caulophryne have luminous organs , 14 to 22 dorsal rays and 12 to 19 anal fin rays. Robia legula lacks the luminous organs and the number of dorsal and anal fin rays is six and five, respectively. The caudal fin of all species has eight fin rays . Ventral fins are only present in the larvae; they are absent in adults . Females become 14 to 20 cm long. The dwarf males stay smaller than 1.5 cm. They live parasitically, attached to the females.
