Ostmark 1941: Reichsgaue, rural and urban districts

The CdZ area of Carinthia and Krain existed from 1941 to 1945.

These were Yugoslav regions ( Banschaft Drau ), which were under a German head of civil administration (CdZ) and were intended to be incorporated into the German Empire . In the parlance of the German authorities at the time, they were called the " occupied former Austrian territories of Carinthia and Carniola ".

history

After the start of the German Balkan campaign against the Kingdom of Yugoslavia on April 6, 1941, northwestern Slovenia was subordinated to the German chief of civil administration in the occupied territories of Carinthia and Carniola .

The seat of the administration was Veldes (today: Bled ).

The Reichsstatthalter and Gauleiter of the NSDAP for the Gau Carinthia, Friedrich Rainer , in Klagenfurt was appointed head of the civil administration . This moved the seat of the civil administration to Klagenfurt on November 15, 1941.

The planned full integration into the German Reich did not take place until the end of the war. However, on November 1, 1942, the "police border" initially set up with the German Reich was lifted.

Since the end of the Second World War , the area has belonged again to Yugoslavia and is now part of independent Slovenia .

Administrative division

At first, the Yugoslav division into district authorities and district-free cities remained, which were administered by German political commissioners.

After a territorial reform in the entire occupied territories of Carinthia and Carniola, these were divided into the three districts of Krainburg (today: Kranj), Radmannsdorf (today: Radovljica) and Stein (today: Kamnik ) in accordance with the usual division in the German Reich ). The landscape designation " Oberkrain " was introduced for these on March 4, 1942 .

On January 20, 1942, the previous district authority Unterdrauburg was dissolved. Their communities were - without formal integration - subordinate to the neighboring district administrators in Reichsgau Carinthia:

  • Unterdrauburg was subordinate to the district administrator in Wolfsberg ;
  • The municipalities of the Miessal were subordinate to the district administrator in Völkermarkt .

For these areas looked after by the neighboring districts, the landscape designation "Mießenal" was introduced on March 4, 1942.

Since October 1, 1942, the German municipal code of January 30, 1935, which was valid in the old territory of the Reich and provided for the implementation of the Führer principle at the municipal level , also applied to all municipalities in the occupied areas of Carinthia and Carniola . However, the municipalities were only provisionally administered by municipal commissioners.

In the Castle of Begunje (Begunje na Gorenjskem) was located from 1941 to 1945, the Gestapo - headquarters of Gorenjska hostage Museum (Oberkrain), now (Muzej talcev) .

Place names

Initially, the Austrian place names valid until 1918 in the German version were provisional. A few other place names were later Germanized.
