Cefpodoxime proxetil is a prodrug of the antibiotic cefpodoxime , a modification with an absorption ester to enable its absorption after oral administration. During the passage through the intestinal mucosa , the pharmacologically active parent substance is restored by hydrolysis by means of non-specific esterases .
