Cendres de lune (dt. Mondasche ) is the first studio album by the French singer Mylène Farmer and was released on April 1, 1986 in France. Although not as successful as the successor, it enabled her to start her career, which was mainly thanks to the single Libertine , which is still one of her greatest hits today.

Emergence

In 1984 the then 22-year-old Mylène Gautier met the two producers and songwriters Laurent Boutonnat and Jérôme Dâhan during a casting. The duo were looking for a suitable singer for their self-written song Maman a tort , which is about the love of a sick girl for her nurse. Mylène Gautier seemed perfect to them. On March 28 of the same year, the single was released under the stage name Mylène Farmer (a tribute to Gautier's idol at the time, Frances Farmer ) in France, a video clip was shot under the direction of Boutonnat. The success was quite respectable with around 100,000 copies sold, but not yet a breakthrough. In September of the same year, an English version of Maman a tort appeared under the title My Mum Is Wrong , but without success. The song On est tous des imbéciles , written by Dâhan himself and published in early 1985, also became a failure with only around 40,000 records sold, whereupon the record label RCA terminated the contract with Farmer. As a result, she and Boutonnat also parted ways with Jérôme Dâhan as songwriting partner and producer and signed a contract with Polydor for two studio albums, but he could be terminated at any time if the success should fail. The next single Plus grandir was again unsuccessful, but Polydor allowed Farmer and Boutonnat to record their first studio album, which was released in April 1986 under the title Cendres de lune . They were supported by Jean-Claude Déquéant as sound engineer , who was also responsible for the music for the hit single Libertine . In 1987 the album was expanded to include the song Tristana , with which the collaboration with sound engineer Thierry Rogen began.

Music genre

During the collaboration with Jérôme Dâhan, the music was still characterized by a rather cheerful pop sound, which was often compared to the work of Jeanne Mas , but with Plus grandir it got a distinctly dark tone. The lyrics here and for example also with Chloé (B-Side of the record single by Plus grandir ) deal with topics such as death, fear and the like. The music is influenced by genres such as New Wave and Dancepop . Greta is a dedication to the famous Hollywood - actress Greta Garbo . The somewhat controversial text by Libertine caused a sensation , where the phrase Je suis une catin ( Eng . I am a whore ) is sung in the chorus . We'll Never Die addresses the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians .

successes

Immediately after its publication, Cendres de lune received rather less attention. As in the summer of 1986 the around 10 minute long video clip on Libertine , directed by Laurent Boutonnat , which, due to its lavish production and controversial content, is about a prostitute (farmer) in the middle of the 18th century and even a sex scene contains, was published, Farmer was henceforth devoted much more attention, making both Libertine and Cendres de lune a success and ultimately her breakthrough in their homeland. The album won two gold awards, the single silver with around 650,000 and 370,000 units sold. The next and last single from the album, Tristana , was also able to build on the success and was awarded a silver record with around 320,000 records sold. Mylène Farmer was already a star in France from Libertine on, mainly thanks to the spectacular video clips .
