history

Edification

As early as 1985, the Malta Football Association intended to build a new small stadium. This became a reality on October 11, 1998, when the President of Malta Ugo Mifsud Bonniċi laid the foundation stone for the stadium. After less than a year of building the stands and roofing, Malta's Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami and the President of the Malta Football Association Joe Mifsud opened the new building. In memory of the Malta Football Association's 100th anniversary in 2000, it was named the Centenary Stadium .

Modernization and remodeling

In 2007, the field surface laid out in 1999 was replaced by a new FIFA two-star artificial turf . This renewal cost 35,000 Lm (81,550 ) and was used for the first time on July 23, 2007.

In May 2017, the Malta Football Association announced that the playing surface would be replaced with a new surface that complies with FIFA rules for professional matches. This means that FIFA and UEFA games can now also take place in the stadium .

Opening game

The first game in this stadium was a play-off between Birżebbuġa St. Peter's and Ghaxaq on September 4, 1999. The first goal of this encounter was scored by Sandro Lapira for Ghaxaq in the 34th minute, Ghaxaq won the game 2-1.

capacity

In addition to seating for 3,000 in accordance with UEFA regulations, the main stand also includes a VIP and press area. Similar to the National Stadium , the stadium replaced an older one, which had a gravel field , the Pace Grasso Stadium in Tarxien .
