Centipeda cunninghamii is a species of plant in the subfamily Asteroideae within the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is common in Australia.

description

Centipeda cunninghamii is a relatively small perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of about 20 cm. It smells aromatic. The upright to ascending, well branched, strong stems are often woolly hairy at first, later glabrous. The petioles of the alternate leaves are hardly recognizable. The light green leaf blade is 1 to 3 cm long, or with a length of about 15 mm and a width of 3 to 4 mm oblong to almost spatulate and narrows towards the base. The leaf margin is serrated to almost entire.

In Tasmania, the flowering period extends from spring to autumn. The mostly single lateral, seated, cup-shaped inflorescences are almost spherical to biconvex with a diameter of 4 to 8 mm. The husks are at a length of 2 to 3 mm more or less ovoid blunt upper end and tiny serrated edge. There are usually six to eight rows of female flowers and 10 to 30 hermaphrodite flowers in each flower head. The tubular flowers are cream-green.

The yellowish-green achenes, which are bare above the ribs, are 1.5 to 2.5 mm long and club-shaped with a rounded upper end. There is no pappus.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

distribution

Use as a medicinal plant

Centipeda cunninghamii has long been used as a remedy by the Aborigines . In 1988 the Aura Laboratories examined the active ingredient in more detail. However, nothing more precise is known about the reason for the healing effect. The extract is still on the market as “Plantolin” ® . It is used in various forms, and especially for skin problems.
