Demographics

At the 2000 census, Centerville had 2,466 residents, 953 households and 684 families. 75.95% of the population were white and 23.03% were African-Americans. 24.6% of the population were under 18 years old, 17.8% over 65. The average age was 39 years. The average income of residents stood at 15,449 US dollars , while 19.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.

history

Since Centerville is close to the Cahaba River , the city was an important trading point for the area from an early age. In 1821, the first post office in the entire county was established in Centerville, and in 1823 Sarah Willis Chotard bought the area and had settlers settle there. In 1829 the city became the county seat of Bibb County. Centerville was declared a city in 1832, and since 1978 the old town of Centerville has been part of the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under the name Centerville Historic District . Furthermore, the Davidson-Smitherman House is registered for Centerville in the NRHP (as of July 3, 2019).
