features

The fish reach a length of ten centimeters and have a very variable body color depending on the region. The basic color is blue, with red or orange horizontal stripes on the flanks. In the reefs of Indonesia there are almost pure blue specimens with only very fine orange horizontal stripes on the sides. In Samoa , on the other hand, there are almost completely red or orange fish whose sides are striped a little darker red and only the lips, the eyes, the gill spine and the edges of the unpaired fins have a blue color residue. The specific epithet bispinosa indicates that below the gill cover thorn that is typical of all angelfish there is another, much smaller thorn.

Fin formula : Dorsal XIIII / 16-18, Anale III / 17-19

Way of life

The striped angelfish is one of the most widespread dwarf angelfish . It lives very hidden in coral-rich lagoons and steep outer reefs at depths of one to 60 meters and always stays close to the subsoil and to hiding places. He lives in pairs or in harem groups of one territorial male and three to seven females. Like all angelfish, the striped angelfish is a protogynous hermaphrodite, which means that the fish are initially female when they reach sexual maturity and after some time transform into males. In a harem association, the strongest female changes her sex, if z. B. the male has died.

Aquaristics

The striped angelfish is one of the most commonly imported angelfish for aquarium use . It used to be called Kennedy's angelfish after the ornamental fish exporter Earl Kennedy.
