Ceraria is a genus of plants of the Didiereaceae familywithin the order of the carnation-like (Caryophyllales).

description

They are bare and more or less deciduous shrubs with dioecious or, in some species, with hermaphrodite flowers. The flat to stalk-round and small leaves are opposite or whorled and fall off before flowering begins.

The flowers are on the side of the shoot and have 1 to 6 tiny individual flowers. Two short, persistent sepals are formed. The five petals are white to deep pink and stand free. The flower contains five stamens which are transformed into staminodes in the female flowers . The pollen are tricolpate. The upper permanent ovary is triangular and is composed of two to three carpels with an ovule . The fruits, which are single-winged at the beginning, are berry-like and, when dried, have one to three persistent wings.

The chromosome number is x = 24.

distribution

The species of the genus are common in Namibia and South Africa.

Systematics

The genre was established in 1912 by Henry Pearson and Edith Stephens. The type species, Portulacaria namaquensis , today Ceraria namaquensis , was identified as the lectotype in 1987 by BL Nyananyo. According to R. Govaerts, however, the genus Ceraria has been included in the genus Portulacaria since 2014.

The genus contains five species:

  • Ceraria carrissoana Exell & Mendoça (Syn .: Portulacaria carrissoana (Exell & Mendonça) Bruyns & Klak ): The home is the southwestern Angola and the northwestern Namibia.
  • Ceraria fruticulosa H.Pearson & Stephens (Syn .: Portulacaria fruticulosa (H.Pearson & Stephens) Bruyns & Klak ): The home is southwestern Namibia and the province of Northern Cape South Africa.
  • Ceraria longipedunculata Merxm. & Podlech (Syn .: Ceraria kaokoensis Swanepoel , Portulacaria longipedunculata (Merxm. & Podlech) Bruyns & Klak ): The homeland is southwestern Angola and northwestern Namibia.
  • Ceraria namaquensis (special) H.Pearson & Stephens (Syn .: Ceraria gariepina H.Pearson & Stephens , Portulacaria namaquensis Sond. ): The home is southern Namibia and the province of North Cape South Africa.
  • Ceraria pygmaea (Pillans) GDRowley (Syn .: Portulacaria pygmaea Pillans ): The home is the southwestern Namibia and the province of North Cape South Africa.
