Ceratodon ( horn-toothed moss ) is a cosmopolitan genus of deciduous moss from the family Ditrichaceae . The name is derived from the Greek keratos / keras = horn and odon = tooth and refers to the dry, hooked, curved peristome teeth.
features
The mosses form loose to dense, yellow-green, green, brownish-green to dark green lawns. The approximately 1 to 4 centimeters or even larger stems are often branched, rhizoid-tomentose below and have a central cord in cross-section. The leaves are narrow-lanceolate to ovate and have a strong rib that extends or protrudes to the tip of the leaf. The smooth to weakly papillary lamina cells are fairly uniform, rounded-square, and rectangular at the base of the leaf. The spore capsule on the elongated seta is deeply grooved and dry, the 16 peristome teeth are deeply divided into two parts, the lid is conical, the kalyptra is cap-shaped.
species
Information on the number of species varies greatly depending on the source (from 3 to around 20). According to Stech & Frey, there are 5 species worldwide. The following 2 types are represented in Europe:
- Ceratodon conicus
- Ceratodon purpureus , the very common purple horn-tooth moss
