Ceropales is a genus of the sawfly (Pompilidae). There are eight species in Europe.

features

The species of the genus Ceropales are small to medium-sized wasps whose bodies have a characteristic appearance. The head and thorax are structured point-like. The inner edge of the compound eyes is strongly converging at the bottom and clearly cut above the center. The frontal plate ( clypeus ) is flattened, its apical edge is more or less concave. The labrum protrudes strongly. The mandibles have an additional tooth. The scutellum and the metanotum are strongly convex. The metanotum is much longer than the metapostnotum, which lies below the metanotum. The back of the propodeum is short. In females, the sixth sternum is drawn out behind the sixth tergum and is strongly folded lengthways. In the males, the subgenital plate is reduced and the genitals are visible. The wings are clear, their wing mark ( pterostigma ) is large. The hind legs are elongated, their hips ( coxes ) are triangular and much larger than the others. The claws of the hind legs are strongly curved.

Way of life

The wasps are kleptoparasites on the nests of wasps of the genera Agenioideus , Anoplius , Arachnospila , Auplopus , Episyron , Pompilus and Priocnemis . The females of Ceropales variegata lay their eggs on spiders that are transported by female digger wasps of the genus Miscophus .
