The Cerro del Borrego ( Eng . Lamb Hill ) is a hill west of Orizaba , east of Río Blanco and south of Ixhuatlancillo in the Mexican state of Veracruz .
Flora and fauna
Two types of vegetation can be found on the hill, producing biodiversity; including some plant species that are threatened with extinction. Among other things, tree ferns , avocado trees and guava plants can be found here. A variety of animal species also live on the hill, such as tlacuaches , armadillos , foxes , raccoons , skunks and snakes . There are also at least 81 species of birds (33 of them roaming) and an as yet unexplored variety of insects and spiders .
history
The hill was the site of two significant battles in Mexican history .
The first took place on October 28, 1812 as part of the Mexican War of Independence . General José María Morelos , who led the Mexican troops , withdrew with his unit to the hill, bombed the Spanish troops from the hill, and from then on blocked their communication routes between Mexico City and Veracruz .
The second battle took place fifty years later during the French intervention and was less successful from a Mexican point of view. Not only did the Mexican troops lose this conflict, but the native Orizabeño Ignacio de la Llave suffered such serious injuries during the fighting on July 18, 1862 that he later died as a result. From this battle there are still old cannons on the top of the mountain.
Cable car
The summit of Cerro del Borrego has been linked to the city by a cable car since 2013. The construction work began in May 2013, the completion and inauguration took place in December 2013. With a length of 917 meters, the Teleférico de Orizaba is the third longest cable car in Mexico and with a height difference of 320 meters it is second in the country. The cable car has six cabins of French origin, can carry more than 150 passengers per hour and covers the distance in five minutes.
