Cesar Ruiz (born June 14, 1999 in Camden , New Jersey ) is an American football player in the position of guard who plays for the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League (NFL).

He played college football at the University of Michigan for the Wolverines and was selected by the Saints in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft .

Early years and high school

Ruiz was born and raised in Camden, New Jersey. Ruiz's father, Edwin Ruiz, died when Cesar was eight years old. He was hit by a driver while helping another driver change tires. Ruiz attended Camden High School before moving to IMG Academy in Bradenton , Florida after his sophomore year . Ruiz was named a Senior Under Armor All-American in 2017. He was rated as a four-star talent and the best center of his year nationwide. Ruling out offers from Florida , Auburn , LSU, and various other programs, Ruiz began playing college football in Michigan.

college

Ruiz played ten games as a freshman and started five games as Right Guard and Long Snapper , his first career kicking off against Minnesota . As a sophomore, Ruiz started all 13 games as a center and was appointed to the third team All- Big Ten Conference by the league's coaches and was praised by the media.

Ruiz was on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy early in his junior season. He started all 13 Michigan games as a center, allowing only eight quarterback pressures in 447 snaps, was named the best college football center in the pass block by Pro Football Focus, and the coaches in the All-Big Ten and second team Elected to third team by the media. After the end of the season, Ruiz announced that he would forego his senior season in order to take part in the 2020 NFL Draft. Over three seasons Ruiz played 36 games for Michigan, with 31 games started.

Ruiz was selected in 24th place by the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft .
