Château d'Eau is an underground station on line 4 of the Paris Métro .

location

The station is located in the 10th arrondissement of Paris . It lies along below the Boulevard de Strasbourg, of there the border between the districts is Porte Saint-Denis and Porte Saint-Martin.

Surname

It is named after the Rue du Château d'Eau, which crosses the Boulevard de Strasbourg there. Their name refers to a former fountain in today's Place de la République . The structure designed by Pierre-Simon Girard consisted of three circular basins arranged one above the other, into which eight cast-iron , recumbent lions spewed water from the Bassin de la Villette . The facility was built in 1811, dismantled in the late 1860s, and rebuilt at the La Villette cattle market .

history

The station went into operation on April 21, 1908 when the first section of Line 4 from Porte de Clignancourt to Châtelet was opened.

description

In contrast to the elliptical cross-section that is often found in Paris, the station has a horizontal metal ceiling. Longitudinal girders, which carry small vaults made of bricks, rest on iron support beams that are perpendicular to the direction of travel. The station was originally 75 m long, in the mid-1960s it was extended to 90 m.

Two entrances are at the southern end of the station, at the intersection of the Boulevard de Strasbourg and the Rue du Château d'Eau. They were designed by Hector Guimard and are a listed building. From about the middle of the platform towards Porte de Clignancourt, an escalator also leads to street level.

vehicles

Until 1928, 5-car trains consisting of initially three twin-engine and later two four-engine railcars and sidecars ran on Line 4 . They were replaced by Sprague-Thomson trains , which were successively replaced by rubber-tired 6-car trains of the MP 59 series in 1966/67 . The MP 89  CC series is currently in use on Line 4 .

Remarks

  1. CC means "Conduite Conducteur" (driver-controlled), in contrast to the driverless type MP 89 CA
