from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chérif Defraoui (born December 6, 1932 in Geneva , † September 27, 1994 in Vufflens-le-Château ) was a Swiss artist .

Chérif Defraoui studied literature and law in Geneva. In 1971 he had his first solo exhibition there in the Gaëtan Gallery . In 1975 the first joint work with Silvie Defraoui , signed C. & S. Defraoui , was presented in the Gaëtan Gallery . Together they took part in documenta IX in Kassel in 1992 . They lived in Corbera de Llobregat in Spain and in Vufflens-le-Château in French- speaking Switzerland . From 1974 to 1999 Chérif Defraoui taught at the l'École supérieure d'art visuel de Genève , where he and his partner set up a mixed media studio. Two successful generations of video artists were trained there by C. & S. Defraoui. Mention should be made of Eric Lanz , Marie José Burki , Simon Lamunière and Emmanuelle Antille , Fernandez, Frédéric Moser and Philippe Schwinger .

Their work together is part of a series called Archives du futur / Archives of the future . This paradoxical title not only questions the common notions of space and time, but also the meaning of collective and individual memory .
