The Chūō University ( Japanese 中央 大学 Chūō Daigaku ) is a private university in Tokyo , which is best known for its law faculty.
It was founded in 1885 as the English School of Law ( イ ギ リ ス 法律 学校 Igirisu Hōritsu Gakkō ) in Kanda-Nishiki. After being renamed Tokyo College of Law ( Tōkyō Hōgakuin ) in 1889, it was upgraded to Tokyo University of Law ( Tōkyō Hōgakuin Daigaku ) in 1903 before the college was renamed Chūō University in 1905 in lockstep with its expansion to include an economics faculty.
There are six faculties: Law, Economics, Business Studies, Engineering, Literature, and Political Science. The number of students without students in the master’s courses ( 大 学院 daigakuin ) is 25,137 (as of 2006).
The main campus (Tama campus) is in Hachiōji . There are also the locations Kōrakuen ( Bunkyō ) and Ichigaya ( Shinjuku ). In addition to the university, the Chūō also includes three high schools.
