Chacarilla is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Chacarilla is the central place of the district of the same name ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Chacarilla in the province of Gualberto Villarroel . The village is located at an altitude of 3845  m at the northern end of the Serranía de Huayllamarca , an approximately 100 km long ridge that extends on the Altiplano in the west of the city of Oruro in a north-west-south-east direction. The closest town is San Pedro de Curahuara on the eastern side of the ridge at a distance of about forty kilometers of unpaved slopes.

Chacarilla is located on the Bolivian plateau on the western slope of the ridge of the Serranía de Huayllamarca , ten kilometers south of the Río Desaguadero . The region has a distinct daytime climate, with mean temperatures fluctuating more strongly during the day than during the year.

The annual average temperature of the region is just under 9 ° C (see Callapa climate diagram), the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 5 ° C in July and a good 10 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is about 400 mm, the monthly precipitation is between 0 and 10 mm in the months May to August and 100 mm in January.

Transport network

Chacarilla is located 200 kilometers by road south of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 2 leads to El Alto , from there Ruta 1 in a southerly direction as an asphalt road to Patacamaya , then Ruta 4 in a south-westerly direction to Cañaviri . From there, an unpaved road leads south via Umala to Chilahuala and there crosses the Río Desaguadero until, after sixty kilometers, it reaches the provincial capital of San Pedro de Curahuara, from where a dirt road leads north-west to Chacarilla .

Due to the historical development, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of Chacarilla 97.0 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
