Chae Ji-hoon (also Chae Ji-hun ; kor. 채지훈 ; born March 5, 1974 in Seoul ) is a former short tracker and current short track trainer from South Korea .

Career

As an athlete

Chae first became world champion over 3000 m at the World Championships in Beijing in 1993 . At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , he was Olympic champion over the 500 m distance and won the silver medal over 1000 m. At the 1994 World Championships he was world champion over 1500 m and the following year four-time world champion at the World Championships in Gjøvik . In The Hague he was again world champion over 3000 m at the 1996 World Cup. In Nagano at the 1998 Winter Olympics , he started the relay and was able to win the gold medal. He also won several gold medals at the Winter Asian Games and the Winter Universiade .

As a trainer

After his active career, he earned a doctorate in sports psychology from Yonsei University . From 2006 to 2007 he was the head coach of the US national short track team and coached Apolo Anton Ohno . He was then head coach at Leading Edge for one season and joined iShortTrack in 2011 , which worked with Potomac in the 2013/2014 season. Chae has been a member of the technical committee of the International Skating Union (ISU) since 2006 and is certified as a level 3 coach in US speed skating.
