Chai Zemin ( Chinese  柴泽民 , Pinyin Chái Zémín , W.-G. Ch'ai Tsê-min ; * October 1916 in Wenxi , Shanxi ; † June 7, 2010 ) was a Chinese diplomat who, among other things, was ambassador to the United States was.

Life

Chai Zemin worked as a teacher after graduating from high school and began his involvement in the revolutionary movement as a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during the Manchurian Crisis and the Second Sino-Japanese War in the mid-1930s . After the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949, he became a government official in Beijing and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in 1960 . Between 1961 and 1964 he was first ambassador to the People's Republic of Hungary and then from 1964 to 1970 ambassador to the Republic of Guinea before he was ambassador to Egypt between 1970 and 1975 .

After Thailand and the People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations in December 1975, Chai became the first ambassador to Thailand in January 1976 . Because of his services to the Sino-Thai services, he was awarded the White Elephant Order. He remained in this ambassadorial post until May 1978, when Zhang Weilie became his successor there. When in the course of reform and opening-up policy of Deng Xiaoping improvement of Sino-US relations was sought, he took over in the summer of 1978, the post of head of in Washington, DC -based liaison offices of the People's Republic of China. As such, he was one of the main negotiating partners in the subsequent negotiations with the United States . After establishing formal diplomatic relations, he became the first ambassador to the United States in March 1979 . In this role, he was instrumental in improving bilateral relations, for which Michigan State University awarded him an honorary doctorate in law. He remained as ambassador in the USA until December 1982 and was then replaced by Zhang Wenjin .

After his return, Chai Zemin became Vice Director of the Chinese Society for Foreign Affairs in 1983 and headed numerous delegations on trips to Africa , America and Europe . He was also a member of the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People for three legislative terms . At the beginning of the 1990s he resigned as vice director of the Chinese Society for Foreign Affairs and was then a director and advisor to various societies and organizations such as the Society for Public Relations, the Society for the Peaceful Reunification of China and the Yellow River Society for Culture and economic development.
