The Khakassian nature reserve ( Russian Хакасский заповедник , Chakasski sapowednik ) is an approx. 2676 km² nature reserve in Khakassia , which was designated in 1999. The reserve is an IUCN Category Ia ( Strict Nature Reserve ) protected area . It is not a contiguous area, but nine sub-areas that are spread over the entire Khakassian republic. In addition to the preservation of flora and fauna , the nature reserve also has the purpose of serving as a research and educational facility.

history

Since the 1970s, efforts have been made to designate areas in the Republic of Khakassia that are particularly worthy of protection. It was not until 1981 that an expedition from the Institute for Developmental Morphology and Ethnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences was sent to map steppe areas in Khakassia and Tuva that could be designated as protected areas. The planning of the protected areas began in the 1980s. At that time, the steppes of Khakassia were largely farmed. The planners of the protected areas were only able to remove some areas from agricultural use with great dedication and perseverance. As a result, the eight parts of today's protected area were created.

Flora and fauna

In the Khakasski sapovednik there are different habitats due to the distribution over the whole of Khakassia .

flora

The specialty of the protected area lies primarily in the diversity of the landscape, which ranges from steppes to taiga . In these two zones there are different units worthy of protection. In the steppe there are mainly steppe, meadow and shrub vegetation as well as lakes and marches. In addition, rare native plants grow in the steppe. In addition to the 877 higher vascular plants , the fauna in the steppe plays an important role. The taiga consists of a cedar forest that is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. 540 vascular plants are found in the taiga.

fauna

In the steppe, the animal world consists of 244 species of birds, 52 species of mammals, six species of reptiles and four species of amphibians. In addition to 139 species of birds, 50 different mammals are resident in the taiga, plus three reptile and three amphibian species. The reindeer , musk deer , otter and snow leopard are among the animals that are particularly worthy of protection and are also on the Red List of Russia and Khakassia .

research

The research conducted in the park spans three areas: inventory, monitoring and problem-based research. The problem-oriented research examines the effects on the park through human influence and the reaction of nature to steppe fires. In addition, databases are created on the various areas of flora and fauna in the steppe and taiga. Another important point of the research center of the protected area is the control of the water quality and the monitoring of the development of the algae flora in the lake and marshland. When creating the corresponding algae database, it was found that there are 428 types of algae in the six lakes examined so far.

The main research areas include:

  • the natural course of the flow process and the discovery of the connection between the separate parts of the nature reserve.
  • Observation of the migration of the Siberian deer population .
  • The inventory of the algae flora in the lakes of the protected area.
  • Research into the stock of halophytes (aquatic plants that thrive in salty waters).
  • The organization of a system of observation of the rare flora and fauna in the steppe of the Koybalskiy region.
  • The assessment of the environmental condition in the areas of the park on the basis of the concentration of toxic pollutants in the snow cover
  • Studying the regeneration time of the areas adjacent to the park
  • Investigate the rare animals in the sanctuary and adjacent areas

Many of the investigations take place within the framework of the “Biodiversity Monitoring on the Specially Protected Natural Area of Altai-Sayan Ecoregion”.

Educational mandate

Visitor center at Lake Itkul

One of the tasks of the nature reserve is to inform visitors and the population. This is of great importance, as the environmental awareness of the Khakass people is not very pronounced.

There are some guidelines for environmental education, which serve to increase the positive opinion of the population about the work of the protected areas.

  • One of the guiding principles is the organization of parties and events in which the environmental aspect is in the foreground. On the one hand, these campaigns are intended to bring children and young people closer to the task of environmental protection; on the other hand, the population, the authorities and the government should be made aware of the various difficulties involved in protecting nature.
  • Another mainstay of environmental education are the museums as well as photo and art exhibitions. To this end, the protected area has entered into several partnerships with other institutions such as museums and educational institutions. Traveling exhibitions are also regularly organized.
  • In addition, the Chakasski sapowednik has its own centers in Abasa and at Lake Itkul . This gives people the opportunity to find out more about the protected area, especially about the flora and fauna in the taiga and at the lake.
