Champagne is a 1928 British comedy film directed by Alfred Hitchcock . It is based on a story by Walter C. Mycroft .
action
In order to teach his spoiled daughter Betty - who also wants to marry a man who does not meet his expectations - an apprenticeship, a wealthy champagne manufacturer pretends to be ruined. His daughter moves to France, where she has to learn to stand on her own two feet, where she is repeatedly confronted with the motif of champagne . In the end, she convinces her father, who lets her watch, of the seriousness of her character and her intentions.
background
- From the start, Hitchcock showed no interest in this film project, which seemed silly to him.
- The author of the template, Walter Mycroft, was a former film critic. He was head of production at the production company British International Pictures and, in addition to writing the book on Champagne, he also wrote the scripts for Hitchcock's crime film Murder - Sir John intervenes! and the musical episode film Elstree Calling , in which Hitchcock was one of the four directors. Mycroft later worked as a producer.
- Gordon Harker, who cast the main character's father, also starred in the Hitchcock films The World Champion , The Farmer's Wife and Elstree Calling .
Reviews
"'Champagne' is a little weaker than 'The Farmer's Wife'." (John Russel Taylor: The Hitchcock biography )
“I was very amused when I saw him. One often thinks of Griffith's comedy scenes, he's very much alive. ” ( François Truffaut in Mr. Hitchcock, how did you do that? )
Hitchcock's assessment
“That is probably the absolute low point of my career.” (Alfred Hitchcock in conversation with François Truffaut in Mr. Hitchcock, how did you do it? )
