Life

Charles-François-Siméon de Vermandois de Rouvroy de Saint-Simon de Sandricourt was a son of General Louis-François de Saint-Simon, Marquis de Sandricourt († 1751) and Louise-Marie-Gabrielle de Gourgues. Maximilien Henri de Saint-Simon (1720–1799) was his brother.

Saint-Simon attended the Collège d'Harcourt and studied theology at the Collège de Navarre . On February 9, 1738, he and his brother Claude received minor orders from Bishop Hyacinthe Leblanc von Joppe (in partibus) in the church of the Augustinian Discalceaten (called Petit-Pères ; Notre-Dame-des-Victoires ) . The Dimissoriale of the Archbishop of Paris, which allowed the Bishop of the Diocese of Metz (his relative Claude de Saint-Simon ) to continue consecrating, is dated June 9, 1748. 1753 Commendatar Abbot of the Conches Abbey near Evreuxshortly afterwards he became vicar general of his uncle in Metz. After Pope Benedict XIV's death in 1758, he went to Rome and assisted in the election of Pope Clement XIII. Appointed Bishop of Agde on March 8, 1759, he was preconized on April 9 and consecrated on May 6 in Paris by his uncle Claude. The following day he swore allegiance to the king.

Bishop Saint-Simon was a scholar. He owned an extensive library in which he - unable to sleep due to severe asthma - spent whole nights. One of his first official acts in Agde was the drafting and publication (1765) of a new breviary , followed by a new missal (missal). The pastoral letters that accompany and introduce them reflect his extensive liturgical and historical research. On the margins of his copy of the Works of Horace (by Noël-Etienne Sanadon ) he wrote his own translation, there are also many marginal notes from his hand on the margins of other Greek and Hebrew works, but he did not publish any writings. On February 18, 1785, the Académie royale des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres made him a member.

Expelled from Agde by the Revolution in 1791 , Saint-Simon went to Paris, where he died under the guillotine on July 26, 1794 (8th Thermidor II), the day before Robespierre was overthrown . Saint-Simon was the last bishop of Agde. The diocese was dissolved as a result of the Concordat of 1801 and its territory was incorporated into the Archdiocese of Montpellier .
