Charles Claes

Charles Marie Joseph Claes (born June 27, 1855 in Halle , Brabant province , † March 31, 1924 in Brussels ) was a Belgian notary , landowner and politician of the Catholic Party . He sat in the Senate from April to May 1912 .

biography

Charles Claes was born in 1855 to François Joseph Claes (1823–1893) and Josephine Depauw (1814–1879). He was married to Adrienne Zoude. Her son Charles Claes (1881-1963) was the son-in-law of Charles Waucquez, the owner of the Grands Magasins Waucquez in Brussels , and took over the notary's office from his father. The daughter Louise married Valentin Brifaut in 1902 . The daughter Lucie married Baron François Houtart.

After the death of Victor Allard , Claes represented the Brussels district in the Belgian Senate from April 23, 1912 to May 13, 1912 . He played an essential role in the execution of the royal edicts of Leopold II.

Around 1900 he had the Groenenberg Castle built on an estate in Vlezenbeek - Sint-Pieters-Leeuw by the Brussels architect Victor Evrard . He also bought a large estate in Le Brûly , which his son expanded after the First World War . Claes' widow acquired Schepdael Castle west of Brussels.
