Charles Fazzino (born December 26, 1955 in Westchester County , New York ) is an American artist and painter of contemporary Pop Art .

Life

As a child, Charles Fazzino received various pop-up picture books from his parents, a Finnish sculptor and an Italian designer , which inspired him and laid the foundation for his interest in three-dimensional art.

As an artist, he first appeared at the age of 15 when he presented various drawings at an exhibition in Bedford Hills, of which he was also able to sell more than two thirds. Later, he studied art history at the Parsons School of Design and attended the New York School of Visual Arts . He completed his studies in 1977 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts . After that, Fazzino initially worked as a street artist. Gallery owners finally recognized Fazzino's talent, so that he was able to make a living from his art early on.

Fazzino does volunteer work for various organizations, for example Rosie O'Donnell ’s The For All Kids Foundation, The Alzheimer's Association, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters, Jefferson Awards for Public Service, The Prostate Cancer Foundation, Habitat for Humanity and Stars on Canvas. In addition, he participates in art projects in schools with his Fazzino Arts Education Initiative . In 2009 he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor .

Fazzino lives and works in New York City.

Today Fazzino is an important representative of contemporary Pop Art. Although he initially used a variety of techniques (including lithography , etching , drawing , oversized acrylic paintings ), he specialized more and more in 3D images, which in some cases set several image levels in a row and so on create a spatial image impression. He also uses strong color contrasts.

Fazzino is particularly interested in his hometown New York . His 3D constructions visualize different facets of urban life and are intended to provide new insights into the hustle and bustle of the city. His favorite subjects include Broadway , the Guggenheim Museum , Central Park , Wall Street , the Empire State Building , the Chrysler Building and the Statue of Liberty .

Fazzino's trademark is the apple. This is symbolic of the Big Apple and is available on many of his New York pictures to see ( Deliciously New York , 1998; As American As Apple Pi , 2002; Taxi's Up, The Apple's Round , 2004; Gay Times in NYC , 2006). In autograph and signing sessions, Fazzino gives apples human traits by painting them with cartoon eyes and mouths.

Fazzino often deals with comic motifs. In addition to numerous pictures in which he used Disney characters, he also created works on the Flintstones family ( Flintstones , 1993; Broadway Toons , 1995; Flintstones Break Rock Vegas , 1996) or the Looney Tunes ( Looneywood , 2003; Park Avenue to Times Square - Looneys Running Everywhere ! , 2003; Welcome to Las Vegas , 2006; Wear Your Retainer , 2008).

For several years now, Fazzino has also addressed public events in his pictures, such as the Olympic Games , the 2006 World Cup , the Major League Baseball All-Star Game , the American Super Bowl , the Indianapolis 500 , the Winterfest Boat Parade, the Brickyard 400 , the Belmont Stakes , the Pori Jazz Festival, the Grammy Awards , the CMA Awards , the National Jefferson Awards or the Daytime Emmy Awards .

In addition, Fazzino addresses attractive places ( To Broadway , 1986; Sunday in the Park , 1995; The Heart of the Brandenburg Gate , 2015), streets ( Hester Street , 1992; Mangia Mulberry Street , 1998), cities ( Fantastic ... Frankfurt , 1995; Hannover , 2000; That Summer in Berlin , 2005; Shopping Düsseldorf , 2005; The Best of Hamburg , 2006; Munich Has It All , 2013; For The Love of Köln , 2014), districts ( Düren district , 2014) , Federal states ( North Rhine-Westphalia , 2008), federal states ( In a Germany State of Mind , 2005) and the world ( It's a Small World Mural , 2014; What A Wonderful World , 2016).

But Fazzino also repeatedly deals with professional groups and industries in his pictures, in particular with the financial sector ( Stock Exchange , 1992; Money Makes the World go Round , 1994; Money Talks , 1998; More Bang for the Buck!, 2000; Euro, Dollars and Yen , 2001; Banking on New York , 2001; A Penny Saved is A Penny Earned , 2002; Bears-a-Hangin, Bulls-a-Chargin , 2004; NYMEX , 2004; Mein Bankfurt , 2007; We're in the Money: Dollar , 2012; Mind Your Money, In Our Digital Age , 2016). According to Fazzino, “Another Day, Another Dollar” (1997) and “Money Doesn't Grow on Trees” (2000) are two of the most popular images he has ever created.

In addition, Fazzino regularly works on projects in which he leaves his original artistic field. He paints sporting goods such as baseball balls and helmets and also provides them with 3D constructions.

Manufacturing process of a 3D construction

Fazzino's works are created in an elaborate process characterized by a lot of manual work. A black and white line drawing forms the basis of each of his works of art. After coloring, a lithograph and a screen for screen printing are created. Up to 500 screen prints are then created entirely by hand in order to later have the right print for all colors and layers. In the last step, the individual small picture snippets are precisely cut out and glued onto the picture in up to three layers with the help of silicone paste, whereby a bird's eye or frog's perspective can be created by tilting the picture snippets.

Some motifs are also used several times at Fazzino, for example in “Ghosts, Good Times & Gridlock” (2003) and “Google it Facebook me Tweet it LOL” (2012) several identical picture elements can be found.

Editions

Fazzino usually brings out different editions of a picture:

  • Deluxe Edition (DX) - A picture typically layered 3 times by hand on white museum paper, with the pictures additionally decorated by hand with Swarovski crystals. The Deluxe Edition usually has a smaller circulation than the Regular Edition.
  • Premiere Edition (PR) - An image typically layered 3 times by hand on colored museum paper, usually black museum paper. Here, too, Fazzino decorates the pictures with Swarovski crystals. The Premiere Edition has an even smaller edition than the Deluxe Edition.
