Charles Steven Maier (born February 23, 1939 in New York City ) is an American historian.

Life and work

Maier studied history at Harvard University , where he also received his doctorate . Maier has been Professor of European History at Harvard since 1981, where he currently holds the Frederick Saltonstall Professor of Modern History . In 1991 Maier was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

From 1994 to 2001 he also headed the Minda de Ginzburg Center for European Studies (CES) at Harvard, which has set itself the goal of promoting interdisciplinary research and teaching on contemporary Europe. External research assignments include teaching at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (2007). Maier is also a member of the German-American Academic Advisory Council and several other academic advisory boards and expert commissions. Maier was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his research on German history in the 20th century .

Maier's research focus in the past was European and especially German history in the 20th century, dealing with economic-historical questions such as inflation and the Marshall Plan aid , as well as considerations on the topic of global history . Maier's current research projects include a history of the problem of territoriality in modern times and, together with William C. Kirby and Sugata Bose , a global history of the 20th century ( The Passaging of the Territorial Age. Transformations of Territoriality and Their Impact on Domestic and International Politics ).

Maier was married to Pauline R. Maier , professor of American history at MIT, who died in 2013 .
