Charles Silas Richard Trowbridge (born January 10, 1882 in the Mexican state of Veracruz , † October 30, 1967 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

life and career

Charles Trowbridge was born in Mexico to a US diplomat. His younger brother was the famous Western actor Jack Rockwell (1890-1947). He worked as an architect for the first ten years of his adult life before turning to acting. He gained his first experience at the Alcazar Theater in San Francisco alongside Bessie Barriscale . In 1913 he made his debut on Broadway in the stage comedy The Marriage Game , and by 1934 he appeared there in around two dozen other productions.

Trowbridge had already made his film debut in the silent film The Fight in 1915 , but initially concentrated on his theater career and was not mainly a film actor until the 1930s. He usually played small to medium supporting roles, but in B-films he was sometimes given larger roles. Mostly, with his dignified and intelligent appearance, he was seen as a "friendly but authoritarian" person. The gray-haired actor has portrayed governors and senators, commanders and colonels, lawyers and judges, and especially doctors, many times. For example, in John Ford's film Sex Hygiene , intended for the American troops , he played the doctor who advises soldiers on how to avoid sexual diseases. In some horror and crime films, his good-natured characters also met an early death.

Charles Trowbridge withdrew increasingly from the acting business after 1950, most recently he played a tiny role as a club member in 1958 in The Last Hurray by John Ford. In total he played in over 230 films in his career. He died in October 1967 at the age of 85 and was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills .
