Paul de Richard d'Ivry (born February 4, 1829 in Beaune , † December 16, 1903 in Hyères ) was a French composer.

life and work

In 1847 d'Ivry's first opera Fatma was premiered by the Société Philharmonique de Beaune and was also successfully performed at the Lyon Theater. In 1850 he came to Paris, where he met Charles Gounod , with whom he soon became friends. After composing a number of songs, he composed two more operas in 1854, Quentin Metzys and La Maison du Docteur , the latter - based on a libretto by Henri Boisseaux - he dedicated to Gounod.

At the same time he took counterpoint lessons from Simon Leborne and composition from Aristide Hignard . The planned premiere of the opera Omphale et Penélope at the Théâtre-Lyrique in 1855 failed due to a change in the management of the house. He then wrote his main work, the opera Les Amants de Verone (based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet ), which he published in 1867 under a pseudonym: Les Amants de Vérone, “opéra en 4 actes et 6 tableaux, imité de Shakespeare, paroles et musique de Richard Yrvid ". A revised version of the work was published in Paris in 1878. The world premiere took place at the Théâtre Ventadour , Rome and Juliet were sung by Victor Capoul and Marie Heilbronn .

His son Charles d'Ivry (born October 27, 1867 at Coraboeuf Castle in Ivry-en-Montagne , † May 15, 1945 in Sainte-Eulalie (Cantal) ) also started a musical career. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and in 1896 won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with the cantata Mélusine behind Jules Mouquet . Apparently his works have been completely lost.
