Charly Gaudriot
Karl “Charly” Gaudriot (actually Gaudriczek) (born March 12, 1895 in Vienna ; † April 15, 1978 ibid) was an Austrian jazz and entertainment musician (clarinetist, saxophonist, conductor, composer) and music teacher.
Life
Gaudriot studied clarinet from 1909 to 1914 at what was then the Vienna Music Academy with Franz Bartolomey (1865–1920). From 1918 he was a clarinetist with the Vienna Philharmonic , with whom he went on a tour of South America in 1926. There he learned jazz and know especially the sound of the saxophone, whose mastery he autodidactically appropriated. In 1928 he dropped out of the Philharmonic and founded the Charly Gaudriot jazz band, which played dance music with elements of jazz. He later became the conductor of the small Viennese radio orchestra for two decades, which became famous for its programs "Im Konzertkaffee". He also directed the Vienna Jazz Orchestra. Together with Hans Schneider, he set instrumental pedagogical accents with the 20 Etudes for Saxophone (1929), but also wrote dance music , hits and Viennese songs . He was also involved in the music for films such as Csibi, the Fratz (1933). Carl Drewo was one of his saxophone students .
