Charmont (grape variety)
Charmont is a white wine variety . It is a new breed from 1965 between Chasselas (or Gutedel) x Chardonnay . The breeding was carried out by Jean-Louis Simon at the station Federale de Recherches en Production Vegetale de Changins , the Federal Research Institute for Crop Production ( Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ) in Pully . The subsequent selection was made by André Jaquinet. The Doral grape variety emerged from the same cross .
The vine is only grown in Switzerland . In 2007 9.4 hectares of planted vineyards were officially raised. (Source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG)
The goal of the breeding was to create a variety similar to Chasselas with more even yields. In addition, the grape should have a little less acidity and be able to form a higher sugar content (→ must weight ). In good locations, the Charmont actually yields very ripe grapes and the wines resemble a Chardonnay, but without showing its elegance, as the acidity is too low in these cases.
