Sabouroff painter
Sabouroff painter is the notname a Greek vase painter of the Attic - red-figure style . From about 470 to 430 BC. Active, very productive artisans today are more than 330 works known.
The Sabouroff painter was named by John D. Beazley after the Russian collector Pyotr Alexandrowitsch Saburow (1835-1918), the former owner of a Lebes Gamikos of the painter, now in the Berlin Collection of Antiquities . The painter's career can be divided into three phases, in which he worked with several potters. In his first phase, his early period (470 to 460 BC) and the transition phase (460 to 455 BC), he was initially a bowl painter and with the workshops of the Brygos and the Brygos Painter , the Python and the Duris and the Penthesilea painter . In his middle phase (455 to 440 BC) he worked mostly in the workshop in which the Achilles painter was the main master. Here Nolan amphorae and lekytha were the most important image carriers. Towards the end of the middle phase, after he had left the workshop of the Achilles painter, and in the late phase (440 to 430 BC), he mainly decorated white-ground lekyths and a red-figure bowl with a white-ground interior. In the first and second phases, he also decorated vases for the wedding party. The Trophy painter and the Houston painter were among his students .
The white-ground vases by the Sabouroff painter are considered a better part of his work. Here he was the first artist who consistently no longer executed the outlines with a glossy shade , but rather with matt colors in around three quarters of his works. While his red-figure works are rather less original ( John Boardman : pleasing, albeit undemanding, figures of young men and women on bowls ), the larger works are of noteworthy quality, he expanded the range of motifs of the white-ground grave and afterlife scenes to include depictions of Charon , the prosthesis and the visit to the grave.
