Mom Ratchawongse Chatumongol Sonakul ( Thai : หม่อมราชวงศ์ จัตุ มงคล โสณ กุล ; born September 28, 1943 in Bangkok ) is a Thai economist who was, among other things, governor of the Bank of Thailand , the Thai central bank , between 1998 and 2001 .

Life

Family background and government official

Mom Ratchawongse Chatumongol Sonakul was a member of the Thai royal family and a great-grandson of King Rama IV. Mongkut , as well as a member of the Sonakul family. His father, Prince Chanmongkol Sonakul, was the son of Krom Khun Pittayalaphatthitada and the grandson of King Rama IV. Mongkut and his wife Thao Worchan. His great-great-grandfather were King Rama II Phutthaloetla and Queen Sri Suriyendra. His mother, Worawong Chura Ratanasiriman, was the daughter of the Minister of War and the Interior, Paribatra Sukhumbandh, and the Princess Prasong Som Boriphat. Paribatra Sukhumbandh's parents were King Rama V. Chulalongkorn and Sukhumala Marasri , while Princess Prasong Som Boriphat was a daughter of Finance Minister Jayanta Mongkol . His maternal great-great-grandfather was also King Rama IV. Mongkut, who was the father of King Rama V Chulalongkorn with his second wife Debsirindra, and the father of Sukhumala Marasri with his fourth wife Chao Chao.

After attending the renowned Harrow School, Chatumongol Sonakul studied at the University of Cambridge and Harvard University . He then entered the service of the Ministry of Finance, where he was Director General of the Tax Department and Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, before his last position as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance from October 1, 1995 to July 28, 1997. During this time, there was a massive devaluation of the baht , the Asian crisis and long-term intervention by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Ultimately, he was fired by Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh's government after the baht devaluation .

Governor of the Bank of Thailand

During the subsequent government of Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai of the Democratic Party , Chatumongol Sonakul was appointed governor of the Bank of Thailand on May 7, 1998, succeeding Chaiwat Wibunsawat , the Thai central bank . He held this position until his dismissal by the newly elected government of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of the Thai-Rak-Thai party on May 30, 2001, whereupon Pridiyathorn Devakula became his successor. After his release, he became his opponent of the TRT chairman and prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and particularly criticized his populist job creation measures and instead called for a focus on the supply of machines and the promotion of knowledge. After Thaksin was overthrown on September 19, 2006 by a military coup under General Sonthi Boonyaratglin , he was considered one of the favorites for the office of Prime Minister, which, however, was eventually taken over by King Rama IX. Bhumibol Adulyadej was occupied by General Surayud Chulanont . At the same time, the Democratic Party lost the elections against the Party of People's Power .

After Abhisit Vejjajiva took over the post of prime minister from the Democratic Party on December 20, 2008, Chatumongol Sonakul was appointed chairman of the board of the Bank of Thailand. For his many years of service he was awarded the Order of the Crown of Thailand in 1988, the Order of the White Elephant in 1993 and the Order of Chula Chom Klao in 2002.
