Chauncey Guy Suits , also C. Guy Suits (born March 12, 1905 in Oshkosh , Wisconsin , † August 14, 1991 in Pilot Knob , New York ) was an American physicist and director of research at General Electric .

Life

Suits studied at the University of Wisconsin – Madison until 1927 and then went to the ETH Zurich , where he received his doctorate in 1929 with a thesis on valve voltmeters. On his return to the United States in 1930 he became a research assistant to Albert W. Hull at the General Electric Company (GE) . He stayed with GE until he retired in 1965. In 1940 he became assistant to the director of research, before becoming vice director of the group and research director in 1945. During the Second World War he was involved in radar research and radar defense projects. For this work he later received the Presidential Medal for Merit .

In the 1930s, Suits conducted research specifically on high-temperature plasma phenomena and arcs. After the end of the Second World War, as research director, he led, among other things, development work for the production of very hard materials (trade name Borazon ) and industrial diamonds , plastics (trade names Lexan and Noryl) and energy-efficient light sources. He supported GE's involvement in building the Columbia Nuclear Power Plant in Hanford . He held nearly eighty US patents.

Among other awards, Suits received the IRI Medal in 1962 and the IEEE Frederik Philips Award in 1974. In 1946 he was admitted to the National Academy of Sciences and 1964 to the National Academy of Engineering , 1966 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Since 1951 he was a member of the American Philosophical Society .
