Chemin de fer de Jougne à Eclépens

The Chemin de fer de Jougne à Eclépens (JE) is a former Swiss railway company and existed from 1870 to 1876.

history

Le Day Viaduct near Vallorbe

The Jougne – Eclépens opened the railway line from Daillens (near Eclépens ) on July 1, 1870 , the junction of the Jura foot line of the Compagnie de l'Ouest Suisse , to Vallorbe and on July 1, 1875 its continuation from Vallorbe over the Swiss border to Jougne . The continuation of the line to Pontarlier belonged to the Paris – Lyon – Mediterranean Railway (PLM).

The JE route, together with the Simplon route that ended in Valais at the time , is the shortest transit connection from Paris to Italy . As long as the Simplon tunnel was not drilled through, it offered no advantage over the lines Paris – Lyon –Genève and Pontarlier – Les Verrieres – Neuchâtel . Regional traffic in the sparsely populated area was low and the JE did not generate enough income.

The JE route had four stations: La Sarraz , Arnex , Croy - Romainmôtier and Vallorbes. When built, these stations contained a drive-through track, a siding , a terminal building, a free loading area and two platforms. In Vallorbes, these systems were equipped more generously and equipped with a small depot with a turntable and water supply as well as with the necessary facilities for customs clearance.

In 1872, Chemins de fer de la Suisse Occidentale (SO) acquired a significant stake in JE to prevent it from being taken over by competitors due to its permanent financial problems. On December 20, 1876, the Chemins de fer de la Suisse Occidentale (SO) took over the rival company completely.

The section from Vallorbe to Jougne was closed on April 19, 1939, and because the Jougne tunnel was blown up in World War II, it was demolished in 1942.
