The Chen Dynasty ( Chinese  陳朝 , Pinyin Chenchao ; 557 - 589 ) was the fourth and last of the Southern dynasties in China , it was from the Sui Dynasty wiped out. This dynasty had little chance of survival. The devastation of the last few years of the Liang Dynasty severely crippled the Chen Dynasty. The last year of the Chen emperor, Houzhu, was described as 'drunk, dissolute, neglecting the Great Deity of Heaven and his ancestors, he indulged in superstition and surrounded himself with worthless rabble.' The Sui distributed pamphlets about his mistakes, which sparked a revolt among the population. He tried to hide in a well with two of his concubines, but was found. However, Yang Jian spared his life to keep the empire united.
