The Northern Dynasties ( Chinese  北朝 , Pinyin běicháo ) denote a short-lived Turkish - Mongolian rule in northern China by five dynasties during the period of the Southern and Northern Dynasties . They stood in a destructive tension between the culture of China and that of Mongolian, Turkish and Tibetan nomads .

The majority of the Han Chinese ruling tribe in northern China at the time of the Wei Dynasty were the Turkish Tabgatsch , also called Toba. The most important Toba ruler was Tuoba Tao ( Tai Wu , died 452). He resided in Ta-t'ung on the edge of the steppe . As a Sinized Taoist , he persecuted the Buddhists in China .
