Chen Shanguang

Chen Shanguang ( Chinese  陳善 廣  /  陈善 广 , Pinyin Chén Shànguǎng ), born December 1962 in Yanyouting, Hunan , is a Chinese aerospace engineer and major general of the People's Liberation Army . Since October 15, 2019 he has been Deputy Technical Director of the manned space program of the People's Republic of China .

Study and teaching

Chen Shanguang was established in December 1962 in the village Yanyouting (宴游亭村) the greater community Buyunqiao (步云桥镇) in the district of Qidong born in Hunan Province. In 1978, when he was not yet 16, he passed the entrance examination to the Faculty of Mathematics at Wuhan University , where he specialized in computer mathematics and graduated in 1982. He was then assigned to the “Research Institute for Space Medicine and Technology”, the predecessor organization of the Chinese Astronaut Training Center . After a certain time Chen Shanguang went to Changsha and enrolled at the former Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of the University of Science and Technology of National Defense (中国人民解放军国防科学技术大学航天技术系) that an institution of the People's Liberation Army. There he did his doctorate in aerospace engineering (航空 宇航 科学 与 技术).

Chen Shanguang has been a professor at the Institute for Aerospace Technology at Tsinghua University in Beijing since November 2005, and at the Institute for Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southeast China in Nanjing since February 2017 . There he actually works as a doctoral supervisor, while his appointment as professor at Wuhan University in November 2005 was more of an honor for the famous alumnus .

Manned space travel

On September 21, 1992, the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China approved the People's Republic of China 's manned space program. At the time, this was divided into seven areas of responsibility, so-called "systems" (系统), and Chen Shanguang was appointed Deputy Technical Director of the Space System (航天 员 系统 副 总设计师, Pinyin Hángtiānyuán Xìtǒng Fù Zǒngshèjìshī ) right at the start of the program , the under was the responsibility of the then research institute for space medicine and technology. The first commander and technical director of the space travel system was Major General Su Shuangning (宿 双 宁, * 1951), who was to take over the management of the Research Institute for Space Medicine and Technology from 2001.

In 2004, Chen Shanguang inherited all three positions from his manager. He was appointed head of the research institute for aerospace medicine and technology, which has been subordinate to the main witness office of the People's Liberation Army since 1998 , which was accompanied by the promotion to major general. At the same time he became the commander and technical director of the spacecraft system. In this capacity he was responsible for taking care of the crew of Shenzhou 6 (2005), Shenzhou 7 with the Institute developed Feitian space suit for extra-vehicular activities (2008) and Shenzhou 9 (2012) responsible ( Shenzhou 8 was an unmanned aircraft). At the end of 2012, he handed over his offices to Colonel Deng Yibing (邓一兵, * 1966), who was then responsible for the flights from Shenzhou 10 (2013) and Shenzhou 11 (2016).

Chen Shanguang then worked until mid-2016 as editor-in-chief of the bimonthly popular science magazine Astronaut (航天 员, Pinyin Hángtiānyuán ) published by the Bureau for Human Spaceflight and the Chinese Astronaut Education Center, a position he has held since the magazine was founded in October 2005 . To this day (November 2019), Chen Shanguang is editor-in-chief of Space Medicine & Medical Engineering (航天 医学 与 医学 工程, Pinyin Hángtiān Yīxué yǔ Yīxué Gōngchéng in Chinese), initially published as a quarterly since 1988 and from 1996 onwards English language.

On October 15, 2019, the number of Deputy Technical Directors in the manned space program was increased from two to eight due to the increased workload due to the construction of the modular space station - the core module is to be put into orbit in 2021. Chen Shanguang was, like Deng Yibing, one of the newly appointed deputies of Zhou Jianping (周建平, * 1957), since 2006 Technical Director of the manned space program of the People's Republic of China. Chen Shanguang made his first public appearance in his new role on October 26, 2019 at the 1st Space Science Conference (第一 届 中国 空间 科学 大会) hosted by the Chinese Society for Space Research (中国 空间 科学 学会) in Xiamen . In his presentation, he presented the strategy behind the three phases of the manned space program and the successes achieved. He emphasized the high flexibility of the modular space station with its possibilities for future expansion and then went into the manned moon landing, for which there was not only a general consensus, but also preliminary concepts, which are currently being developed further. The goal he defined was the establishment of a manned research base - natural resources were not mentioned , as was already the case at the Zhuhai conference in July 2019 - which should also serve to gain experience and develop technologies that will be used in a manned Mars landing in the long term should.
