The dam Cheoah ( English Cheoah Dam ) is a dam with hydroelectric power plant in North Carolina , USA . It dams the Little Tennessee River , which forms the border between Graham and Swain County at this point , to a reservoir (English Cheoah Reservoir ).

The dam is used to generate electricity. Initial plans for Alcoa to build hydroelectric power stations on Little Tennessee go back to 1909. Construction of the dam began in 1916. It was completed in 1919. The dam is owned by Alcoa Power Generating Inc. (APGI) and is also operated by APGI.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 68.6 m (225  ft ). The length of the dam is 228.6 m (750 ft). The dam wall has a flood relief with 19 segment weirs .

Reservoir

At the normal storage target of 389 m (1276.8 ft) above sea level , the reservoir extends over an area of around 2.6 km² (644  acres ).

power plant

The power station is on the left bank of the river. It went into operation in 1919. The installed capacity with 5 Francis turbines amounts to a total of 132 MW . Originally 4 turbines with a maximum output of 24,000 hp each were installed; from 1947 to 1949 the power station was expanded by a fifth machine. The total flow is 267 m³ / s (9426  cft / s) for all turbines combined.

From 2012 to 2013 the 4 older machines and the associated transformers were replaced by new systems. The total cost of the project is given as $ 110 million .

Others

The dam was used as the setting for the film On the Run with Harrison Ford .
