The Cherry River is a (with North Fork) 46 kilometers long left tributary of the Gauley River in the counties of Pocahontas , Greenbrier and Nicholas in the US state of West Virginia . The river, which is part of the Mississippi catchment, drains a wooded area in the southeast of the state and runs largely in the Monongahela National Forest .

The Cherry River is formed by the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork , which arise in Counties Pocahontas and Greenbrier, near Richwood . From here it flows mainly in a north-westerly direction through Nicholas County to its confluence with the Gauley River south of Craigsville . The most important tributary is the Laurel Creek .
