Chet in Chicago: The Legacy Vol. 5 is a posthumous jazz album by Chet Baker . It contains recordings of the trumpeter with the Bradley Young Trio, which were made in Chicago in May 1986. The album was released by Enja in 2009 .

background

For much of the last two decades of his life, Chet Baker seemed to be going to the studios so often you never knew what to expect, wrote Ken Dryden. “The result was a shot in the dark, depending on whether or not Baker was suffering from the effects of his drug addiction at the time .” Baker's friendship with Chicago-based pianist Bradley Young in the early 1980s gave the younger man the opportunity to join in to play the trumpeter together. As a result, during a return engagement in 1986, Young suggested a recording date to spoantan, which Baker accepted, although everything had to be put together quickly within two days, including finding a studio and putting together a band. There was also bassist Larry Gray and drummer Rusty Jones . The band played a range of jazz standards and jazz compositions that have long been part of Baker's repertoire.

The Munich label Enja has released a number of previously published recordings by Chet Baker in the series The Legacy , starting with The Legacy Vol. 1 (1995, Bigband, Live Audimax, Hamburg 1987), The Legacy Vol. 2 - I Remember You (1996, Café Montmartre, Copenhagen 1984), The Legacy Vol. 3 - Why Shouldn't You Cry (1998, with Wolfgang Lackerschmid , Stuttgart, 1978) and The Legacy Vol. 4 - Oh You Crazy Moon (2003, with Phil Markowitz , Scott Lee , Jeff Brillinger , Ludwigsburg Cultural Center, 1978).

reception

Ken Dryden gave the album four stars in Allmusic, writing: “Baker is in good shape on his instrument and seems to be inspired by the local rhythm section , especially the brisk treatment of“ Old Devil Moon, ”the dreamy“ We'll Be Together Again ”and the glowing rendition of“ Solar ”. Baker adds his fragile vocals to another rendition of " My Funny Valentine, " while tenor saxophonist Ed Peterson is a high-quality guest on several tracks, including an airy "Ornithology". Despite the many Chet Baker CDs containing his music in the 80s, this album is one of his better accomplishments from that time.

According to C. Michael Bailey, who reviewed the album in All About Jazz , Baker also turned out to be a downright traditionalist at the Chicago session in how he approached a melody and improvised on it. Baker was a skilled musical guide, wrote Bailey, able to translate the gnarled bebop of Charlie Parker's "Ornithology," the slippery hardbop of "Sippin 'at Bells," and the cool modalism of "Solar." The trumpeter sounds relaxed and self-confident; Baker and tenor saxophonist Ed Peterson as guest soloist made a provocative couple in the interpretation of these songs. "Bradley Young's leadership qualities coupled with his competent arranging and solo playing make this record a most enjoyable one."
